As Indiana's first board tested Certified Kitchen and Certified Bathroom designer, Michael was among the first group of 13 designers in the nation to receive the Certified Master Kitchen & Bath Designer designation. He and Carol, his wife of
37 years, have been designing kitchens and baths since 1974. Mike and Carol started Kitchens by Teipen in January 1988. They worked from their home for 2 1/2 years until the business's growth required they establish a more visible presence in a showroom.
Now enjoying his 33rd year as a designer, Mike’s goal remains consistent: “To improve the quality of each client’s living standards by empowering them to make informed choices from the best possible design concepts, products and services, tailored within their investment range, so their finished product is as personalized as your signature.”
Mike’s work has been published in a number of national magazines; he has been a national design finalist 38 times and won numerous awards, including a 3rd place in the 2004 NKBA competition, category “Other Rooms.” He is currently president of the Indiana State Chapter of the
NKBA.

Since 1998, Jennifer has coordinated the construction schedule, including the organization of electricians, plumbers, carpenters and contractors. She works directly with the client to ensure that all of their questions are met; her goal is to make sure that the client is not forced to “be the contractor” and take care of unnecessary issues. Jennifer loves the building and construction industry because of the satisfaction she gets from the finished product—a pleased client.
She has been involved in several remodels that have won national design awards and been published in national magazine. Having recently completed the construction of her own custom home, Jennifer has a greater understanding of the management process. “A project is like a very large puzzle,” she says. “All the pieces must fit in order to see the beautiful picture.”

A graduate of Purdue University, Kristen believes that it is very important to live in your home for a while before you start re-designing it. “This way you have a feel for how you live in the home now, what works and what doesn’t work.” Having focused on kitchen and bath design for the past seven years, the first kitchen that Kristen designed won a national award. She has since had several kitchens published in national magazines and won awards in the NKBA National Design Competition.

Having graduated with a degree in interior design from Indiana State University, an
NKBA-accredited school, in May 2003, Erin began work as a design assistant at Kitchens by Teipen in July 2003. She assists the designers by completing hand-drawn and computer perspectives and floor plans, as well as pricing. During the initial process, Erin visits the job site to assist with measurements and get a feel for the existing space, which aids in the design of the new kitchen.
